コンピューティングリソースにおけるApplianceって用語は何を意味するのか？
AWSのドキュメントを読んでいて、
AWS Storage Gateway Hardware Appliance は、オンプレミスデプロイ用の、物理的なスタンドアロンの検証済みサーバー構成です。Storage Gateway ソフトウェアが事前ロードされており、ファイルゲートウェイ、ボリュームゲートウェイ、またはテープゲートウェイの作成と構成に必要なすべての CPU、メモリ、ネットワーク、SSD キャッシュリソースを提供します。Storage Gateway Hardware Appliance は、簡単ですぐに使用できるように設計されており、AWS コンソールまたは API から管理されます。追加のインフラストラクチャは必要ありません。

⇧ そもそも、「Appliance」って何なの？って思ったので、ネット情報をぐぐってみたところ、
一般的に「アプライアンス」とは、「器具」や「家具」や「電化製品」など全般を指す用語だが、特にIT用語としては、「特定の用途で使われるように最適化された機械や器具（コンピュータ）」のことを指す。つまり、「アプライアンスサーバ」と言ったときには、特定の用途向けに設計、開発されたサーバのことである。
アプライアンスという用語がコンピュータ、ネットワーク業界で頻繁に使われるようになったのは1990年代末である。
その後、これまでに数多くのアプライアンスサーバ製品が登場してきた。現在、このカテゴリを大きなくくりで見ると、ネットワーク、セキュリティ、ファイル共有などの分野で数多くの製品が提供されている。
ネットワークインフラ系のアプライアンスサーバには、ウェブサーバ、メールサーバ、キャッシュサーバなどのアプライアンスがある。ホスティング事業者のサービスインフラ、あるいはイントラネット構築のためのビルディングブロックとして需要を伸ばしたこれらのアプライアンスサーバだが、汎用サーバのハードウェア価格の低価格化や、オープンソース系のインターネットサービスアプリケーションの台頭などがあり、2002年以降は市場は縮小している。

サービスとか製品名に「Appliance」って言葉が付与されていたら、何かしらの用途に特化、最適化されたものという認識で良いってことですかね。

Wikipediaさんによりますと、「computer appliance」って言葉の説明だと、
A computer appliance is a computer system with a combination of hardware, software, or firmware that is specifically designed to provide a particular computing resource. Such devices became known as appliances because of the similarity in role or management to a home appliance, which are generally closed and sealed, and are not serviceable by the user or owner. The hardware and software are delivered as an integrated product and may even be pre-configured before delivery to a customer, to provide a turn-key solution for a particular application. Unlike general purpose computers, appliances are generally not designed to allow the customers to change the software and the underlying operating system, or to flexibly reconfigure the hardware.
Another form of appliance is the virtual appliance, which has similar functionality to a dedicated hardware appliance, but is distributed as a software virtual machine image for a hypervisor-equipped device.

AWSにおけるApplianceという用語がどういう意味を意図しているかは不明ですが、『a computer system with a combination of hardware, software, or firmware that is specifically designed to provide a particular computing resource.』と同じ様な意味合いと考えて良いってことなんかね？
まぁ、現代のWeb開発においては、普通の会話で「Appliance」って用語が出てくることがほとんど無いのかもしれんけど...
1990年代末に頻繁に使われてた用語ってことらしいので、IT歴の長い強強エンジニアなら通じる用語なのかもしらんけど...
